Intense pulsed light, otherwise known as IPL is an advanced technology used by cosmetic and skin therapists, as well as medical practitioners, to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes. These include Hair Removal, Skin Rejuvenation and Acne Clearance.
The IPL hand piece omits light and heat on trigger (controlled by your therapist) in the form of wave lengths. These wave lengths are produced by pulses of energy, that are measured in joules. The treatment becomes effective when the energy produced, is absorbed by the pigmentation in the skin or hair follicle and reaches its “end point”.
For the purpose of treating Hair Removal, the darker pigment (chromophore) of the hair follicle attracts and absorbs the energy from the light. It is at this point that the energy is converted to heat or warmth, which travels to the bulb or base of the hair, destroying its’ ability to regenerate and therefore, resulting in permanent damage. This means NO MORE HAIR!!
The treatment of pigmentation, redness or rosacea, or evening of skin tone via Skin Rejuvenation works in a similar way to that of Hair Removal. The delivery process is the same, however, the light works on a different wavelength altogether, skipping the Epidermis (upper layer of the skin) and working down to the Dermis (middle layer of the skin). It effectively targets pigmentation and redness by blasting or breaking down the anatomical structures, such as blood vessels and melanocytes that cause these conditions to occur. In a safe and relatively painless way of course!
Acne clearance works by targeting the sebaceous (oil producing) glands within the skin and helps to regulate sebum production. At the same time, the blue/green light effectively kills of the Acne causing bacteria that reside within the skin. All acne types can be treated using this method and it is a great alternative to antibiotic treatment, with the added benefit of treating scaring too!
Hair Removal: The average person will require 10-12 treatments in total, to achieve a permanent reduction of hair, however, your hair grows in cycles and everyone’s growth cycles vary, based on genetics, hormonal influence and medications that as a side effect, may induce hair growth, so it is not uncommon to require more than 12 treatments to achieve your desired result.
Skin Rejuvenation: 8-12 treatments in total are usually required and should be done fortnightly, depending on your treatment concerns. For example, pigmentation such as solar keratosis and melasma, are often harder conditions to treat and take more time to resolve. It is always safe to expect to fall within the higher end of the treatment spectrum to avoid disappointment, however, your therapist will be able to provide you with a more accurate indication of the number of treatments required.
Acne Clearance: Generally, 6-8 treatments in total are required but this is purely based on the severity of the underlying infection causing the acne. This treatment is most effective when accompanied by a GOOD homecare routine. Your therapist can provide advice on everything you need to know at your initial consultation.
It is recommended that treatment for Hair Removal in particular is started in the cooler Autumn/Winter months.
Skin Rejuvenation and Acne Clearance can be done all year round, however, it is imperative that you have good and consistent protection from the sun whilst you undergo these treatments. This means, Applying SPF 30 or higher, multiple times throughout the day and wearing a hat when out in direct sunlight.
